Abstract
Our fifth probe explores architecture’s ability to develop an emergent definition of itself understood as the art + science of social-ecological systems design toward greater global-to-local systems resilience and adaptability. Sapelo Island, one of the barrier islands off the coast of Georgia, is home to the UGA Marine Institute which conducts research and monitering of local ecology. We were asked to design for them a new addition to their facilities in the form of research and education space, as well as supplemental programming that was to be decided by us. Important to their research is the use of mesocosms,  a sort of middle state between macro and micro at which controlled experiments and monitering could be done of an ecosystem, which must be included in the new design.
